Thames Valley Police - Water Safety Warning

This hot weather has encouraged people to cool off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes. Please be mindful that this can be very dangerous.

Dangers of open water:
  • The water may look calm on the surface, but there can be strong undercurrents that could pull even a strong swimmer under the water.
  • The water may feel warm on the surface, but just a few feet below the surface it can be icy cold.  The cold water can affect stamina and strength of swimmers.

Key safety tips for staying safe near water:
  • Alcohol and swimming do not mix! Stay out of the water if you have been drinking.
  • Never let any children swim in unsupervised areas like quarries, canals or ponds.
  • Never interfere with lifesaving equipment - you might need it yourself.
  • Swimming anywhere other than at purpose built and supervised swimming pools is highly dangerous and is not recommended, unless as part of an organised club.

Parents please make sure your children are aware of the dangers!

Are you an Artist? Are you looking for a Summer Residency Programme?

Summer Residency Programme

Salary / Fee:
£150 materials fee / studio space provided in-kind
Closing Date:
Friday, 30 June, 2017
Following the success of OVADA’s 2016 Summer Residency, we are offering free studio space and a small materials fee for Oxfordshire artists to take part in this year’s programme in August 2017. OVADA will select up to 4 artists at any stage of their career, including recent graduates.
The aim of this programme is to provide uninterrupted time and space for the development of new work in a stimulating creative environment. Residencies can be developed around a particular project, used as a way to experiment with new ways of working or to explore working on a larger scale in OVADA’s unique warehouse space.
The opportunity is open to contemporary visual artists in Oxfordshire demonstrating a serious commitment to their practice. This is a chance for artists to work independently in an alternative space. Priority will be given to creative practitioners who do not currently have a studio/production space and to those who can maximise usage of the space during the residency period.
The residency will provide time and space for research, experimentation, reflection, dialogue and creative risk-taking. It is important to note that there is no prescribed outcome for this residency; the opportunity is solely focused on the development of the artist’s practice rather than a completed artwork.
Residencies will take place at OVADA warehouse in central Oxford (14A Osney Lane, Oxford OX1 1NJ). The warehouse space will be loosely divided into areas based on individual artist’s needs. Please note that these are open workspaces in view of other residency artists and building-users. We anticipate that artists will informally exchange their knowledge and experiences with each other and meet OVADA’s studio artists/team in order to make new contacts.
Artists will receive £150 towards the cost of their materials at the start of the project, paid upon invoice, and will also receive free Associate Membership for one year.

AFF reassured about housing safety for Army families

AFF reassured about housing safety for Army families

Following the tragic incident at Grenfell Tower in London, the Army families Federation (AFF) has approached the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), to clarify whether multi-storey Service Families Accommodation (SFA) features any external cladding, which would potentially present a fire risk.

Safety assured
DIO checked the position of this issue and were able to inform AFF that multi-storey buildings are predominantly brick construction. The external wall insulation used on recent energy efficiency upgrades to military housing has also been confirmed as meeting all relevant building and fire regulations.

AFF Housing Specialist Cat Calder said, “Ensuring the safety of our Army families is paramount and AFF has received assurances of safety from all relevant parties involved. DIO has also advised us that a review will now be carried out of all non-habitable areas such as stairwells, plant rooms and communal areas, to confirm the safety of the Army families living there.”

Contact AFF
If families are at all concerned about safety in their SFA, they should contact housing maintenance and repairs contractor CarillionAmey (CA) directly on 0800 707 6000 or contact AFF’s Housing Specialist Cat Calder on

The Corn Exchange Newbury are looking for a creative individual with experience of running and managing their own arts projects. The ideal candidate will be pro-active and enthusiastic about widening inclusion in the arts. We are particularly interested in meeting people with an understanding and passion for the value of arts participation for a wide variety of community participants.
The Ageing Creatively Co-ordinator role was created in 2016 to develop an entirely new strand of work for the Corn Exchange, Newbury, as part of our growing ‘Get Involved’ programme. This work is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund as well as by West Berkshire Council and other trusts and foundations. There is now an opportunity to grow the Ageing Creatively Programme from its initial phase and to continue to establish and shape new aspects of the programme of arts activities for older people. Please refer to the application pack on our website ( for further information on this role.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone working within an arts learning and participation context to specialise in arts for older people. The Corn Exchange recognises the positive value of diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination and we welcome and encourage job applications from people of all backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from disabled candidates and those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds as they are currently under-represented within our staff team.

MOD Housing Referral Scheme

The MOD Referral Scheme is coordinated by JSHAO to assist some service leavers to get accommodation via housing associations.
Some housing associations ask JSHAO to nominate personnel as tenants for vacant properties. Being on the MOD Referral Scheme provides an additional route to secure housing.
The MOD have recognised that some service leavers have difficulty in accessing social and affordable housing. Through this scheme the donating housing associations are able to help people who otherwise may have problems being prioritised high enough to have a realistic chance of being housed by local authorities.

Applicants must be:
  • armed forces personnel within 6 months of their discharge date
  • currently occupying service accommodation, the Services Cotswold Centre or a hostel
Applications for the scheme can be accepted from service leavers, married or single, and from separated spouses living in SFA.

Thames Valey Alert - Vehicle Online Shopping Fraud

Fraudsters have been advertising vehicles and machinery for sale on various selling platforms online. The victims, after communicating via email with the fraudster, will receive a bogus email which purports to be from an established escrow provider (a third party who will keep the payment until the buying and selling parties are both happy with the deal).

These emails are designed to persuade victims to pay upfront, via bank transfer, before visiting the seller to collect the goods. The emails also claim that the buyer (victim) has a cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by this trustworthy third party, when in fact it is not and the money has gone straight to the fraudster.

Protect yourself:

  • When making a large purchase such as a new car or machinery, always meet the seller face to face first and ask to see the goods before transferring any money.
  • If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling, grammar, or any other errors, and check who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller.
  • Contact the third party the fraudsters are purporting to be using to make the transaction. They should be able to confirm whether the email you have received is legitimate or not.
  • False adverts often offer vehicles or machinery for sale well below market value to entice potential victims; always be cautious. If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.
If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting, or by calling 0300 123 2040.
